CM Solar Panel Program
LAHORE: As of June 02, 2025, the CM Solar Panel Scheme, which the Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, introduced, is still gaining traction. This program, which aims to give 100,000 low-income households free solar systems, is a significant step in Pakistan’s efforts to lower electricity costs and promote renewable energy.
Recent Advancements
In early 2025, the program, also known as the Roshan Gharana Program, began distributing solar panels, with the first shipment arriving in Punjab by February. Over 94,483 systems are expected to be installed by May 2025, with 50,000 units set aside in Phase 1 and supported by a budget of Rs 12.6 billion. Early in May, the balloting process came to an end, and the chosen applicants are currently being physically verified. Late May is when installation is scheduled to begin.
Qualifications
- Usage of Electricity: Monthly consumption by households can reach 200 units.
- Residency: Must be a Punjabi resident and possess a current Pakistani CNIC.
- Registration: No households with existing solar systems or duplicate applications are accepted; only new applicants are.

Next Actions
To deter theft, a select group of households will receive solar kits that include panels, batteries, and inverters connected to their CNIC. With an emphasis on rural areas and more funding, the government intends to extend the program after 2025. Those who were not chosen for the current draw may reapply in later stages, which are anticipated to open later this year.
The Significance of It
This program provides struggling families with financial relief while promoting a greener future, as electricity bills are on the rise and power outages are common. Although there are still issues with long-term funding and maintenance costs, it serves as a model for other provinces.
